# SocialFi reviews

#### The Limitations of Friend.tech

As the first blockbuster in the SocialFi space, Friend.tech's business model once set the standard for SocialFi. However, it's fair to say that Friend.tech's model is built on a foundation that is revolutionary but also highly reminiscent of a Ponzi scheme. It leverages the Bonding Curve mechanism, allowing each user to quickly issue their personal tokens and access exclusive content from creators by holding these tokens. While this model reduces costs for project operators, it also leads to inflated paper profits for users and a long road to actual profitability.

As mentioned, Friend.tech lacks mechanisms to incentivize creators to continuously produce high-quality content. Most users join the platform merely to make money, resulting in a scarcity of long-term, high-quality content and a gradual decline in user activity. It resembles a low-threshold gambling platform rather than a true content-based social platform.

The biggest obstacle preventing Friend.tech from becoming a great product is the team's short-term focus, blind pursuit of rapid growth, and lack of long-term development planning. In its early days, Friend.tech adopted aggressive tactics to attract users quickly, such as allowing the presence of opening bots and hinting at airdrop expectations. While these tactics did help the project rapidly attract users, they also sowed the seeds of future problems. The project lacks a long-term strategic vision, leading to stagnation after achieving a certain scale.

Despite these flaws, Friend.tech provides an efficient means for individuals to monetize their personal value, meeting latent user needs. Its method of integrating user profiles through Twitter also lowers the barriers to user acquisition. These aspects are worth emulating by other SocialFi projects.

#### Challenges Facing the SocialFi Sector:

* Lack of killer applications, remaining on the fringe. The market cap of SocialFi tokens represents only one-thousandth of the total cryptocurrency market value, significantly lagging behind hot sectors like GameFi and NFTs. No true killer applications have emerged, and the industry is still in its early stages of development.
* High entry barriers hinder user growth. Compared to familiar Web2 social platforms, current SocialFi applications have high entry barriers. The simple act of creating a wallet is already a significant hurdle for most ordinary users. The high learning curve is a major barrier to SocialFi's entry into the mainstream market.
* Existing projects lack user stickiness and long-term incentives. Most existing SocialFi projects rely on wealth effects and token airdrops to attract users, lacking content mechanisms and economic models to retain users long-term. Once the financial incentives fade, user attrition becomes a significant issue.
* Small user base dilutes social features. The core attribute of social products is the network effect—the more participants, the greater the value. However, the limited user base of SocialFi diminishes its social attributes, making it difficult to develop strong user stickiness.
* Lack of differentiation from Web2 social giants. SocialFi projects have some inherent advantages in privacy protection and data ownership. However, these alone are insufficient to compete effectively with dominant Web2 social platforms. SocialFi urgently needs breakthroughs in user experience and content diversity.
* Decentralization could be a double-edged sword in social contexts. As a core selling point of SocialFi, decentralization might be an advantage in other domains, but it could have negative implications in social settings. For example, the lack of effective control measures can lead to the inability to filter harmful content promptly, affecting user experience.
